How To Build a Blog Network

Having one blog just isn’t enough nowadays due to the amount of new blogs springing up every day, as well as the “monopoly” of traffic by a handful of big-name bloggers.

The entire blogosphere is headed towards blog networks. Instead of spending time writing a blog, most smart entrepreneurs are building their own network of high-powered blogs and outsourcing the content to thousands of eager writers.

There are thousands of new blogs created every day, which makes it difficult for a new blog to succeed. Besides, most of the markets are monopolized by a handful of venture-capital-funded blogs operated by big-name bloggers, and there’s simply no way you can overtake them with just one blog.

Here’s what most of the top blog networks look like:

  • Weblogs Inc, a blog network of 90 weblogs employing over 130 bloggers was sold to AOL for a whopping $25,000,000.
  • B5 Media, another popular blog network recently raised $2,000,00 in venture capital funding.
  • Boing Boing, a four-person operation that bills itself as a directory of wonderful things, is on track to gross an estimated $1 million in ad revenue this year (2006).

My friend Kidino recently conducted an interview with a reputable blog network owner, on the topic of hiring bloggers and building a massive blog network. “Mr.P” owns several blogs on various topics, and made $50,000 last year without Adsense.

These are the things he covered in his interview with “Mr.P”:

  • What type of platform, plugins and tools you need to build a blog network
  • How to find dedicated, passionate writers for your blogs
  • How to pay writers and manage multiple blogs
  • How to get massive traffic to your blogs
  • How to monetize your website other than using Google Adsense

Guys, this is not for beginners wanting to create their first blog. It’s about building blog networks, like WeblogsInc, Gawker Media, B5Media etc…

There is another type of BLOG Network which uses business Referral and/or Networking Groups as the foundation for a small BLOG Network. In this type of BLOG Network you work closely with a short list of others to create a larger footprint. Example: you are in a weekly meeting group and you have 20-30 people in the group. Encourage those in the group to create individual BLOGs then cross subscribe via RSS. Make a point of cross-posting with relevant comments, making links back to your individual BLOG pages where you have related BLOG entries. It takes a little work but the results are powerful.
