Blogger Beta to Match Wordpress?

One of the biggest setback of having your account at Blogger.com is the inability to group and organize your posts by categories.

However, with the pending release of Blogger Beta this may no longer be a problem.

Blogger Beta

With the beta you can:

  • Categorize your posts with labels
  • Control who can read your blog
  • Change the appearance and content of your blog with your mouse instead of HTML

Currently, it’s still in Beta (obviously) so only a selected group of people are invited to test it out. The rest will be able to use Blogger Beta when they roll it out completely.

This is the most significant move by Blogger to get up to date with other blogging platforms like Wordpress and Typepad.

Good things are to come if you’re using blogger, although I dont think even Google can match the rapid development of Wordpress and the contibutions from the immense talent pool in the Wordpress community.

I began to consider moving to wordpress from blogger for two primary reasons. One, I had the idea that setting up auto ping from technorati would be easier on wordpress. Second, my blog will be of the size to benefit from catagories soon and I wanted to get ahead of the curve.

Well, I opened a wordpress free account, but I soon found out that if I wanted to access the feature to add technorati’s auto ping I would have to pay for that priviledge. $25. Now, granted that’s not a lot of money, but why pay to use a free service? Likewise, I would have to pay to do any changing on the template. It seems devious to me to promote a service offering such great features, and then find out that you have to pay for them if you want to use some. I have no doubt that wordpress has many great features to offer, many are probably superior to blogger.

But, blogger is truly free, AND they are constantly improving the competitiveness of their service… for FREE!

In fact my second concern was to add catagories to my blog, and what do you know? Beta is now offering that. So, the only sacrifice I am making is that I will have to manually ping technorati, at least for awhile. Even that may be a non-issue. It may just be my lack of skill and knowledge that is the problem.

But, I said all that to say this. Blogger seems to have the reputation among the nose-in-the-air crowd of so called tech-nerds that it is for beginners. No argument from me on that, as I certainly am a novice and I am having to get in and roll my sleeves up and learn a lot by trial and error. BUT… but, having been in the business world for more years than I care to think about, I do know that even fairly large sized businesses do NOT want to invest large amounts of money to acquire the technical skill necessary to set up and maintain something as simple and add-onish as a blog for their business. Blogger fills this very real need exceptionally, and they do it for free.

I agree with the above comment..while wordpress may seem to have a more impressive features those are not FREE! You have to pay for the fantastic features! I feel totally let down when I have to get my Wordpress blog hosted somewhere else to use a theme that I like (and most of the free themes suck!)

On the other hand, Blogger lets me have lot of features and changing a theme is no problem! For FREE!

Got something to say?
