5 Free Wordpress Theme Design Tools

Some of us are budding designers without designer skills. We dream of coming up with the latest and greatest in WordPress or website design and have thousands of frenzied bloggers sitting at our heels begging us for the theme.

Well, the following sites aren’t exactly going to make you famous, but they can satisfy your desire and need to design your own theme with absolutely no knowledge about CSS, html,PHP and other coding needed.

Most apply a drag and drop building mechanism and before you know it you will have created your very own theme.

In the worst case the following sites will help you to pass a couple of hours playing around tweaking things like I just did.

So, here they are; hope you find something useful for yourself. image

dotemplate has many modern and clean looking designs. I personally prefer a double sidebar since it gives us more room for content, but these templates are ideal for the marketer who is looking for aesthetic design maybe for a niche website.

The site is currently in beta and more templates are bound to be added in the future. There is no need to sign up as one can download their creation instantly.

templatr is a WordPress creation software. It allows you to create and customize your own WordPress blog. I found it took a little getting used to and the best way to get familiar with the software is to play around with it.

No download is needed, you can do it all on the site itself. Change colors, padding, layout, borders, header, footer, images and more. You can upload your own images and use them. Once you are done you can download the finished product and install it on your server.

There are even options to translate to other languages. I haven’t tested this and am not sure how valuable and accurate the translation is.

WordPress theme generator is a snappy online tool that allows you to create themes but it is a little limited. As far as I found there isn’t a way to add a second sidebar. All though you can add a sidebar that is 300 px wide it won’t allow you to break it. Which isn’t a problem for geek’s but for newbies it isn’t very helpful in my eyes.

I suppose it is a great tool to learn a little about design and code names and it is fun to play around too.

cssez is an online based CSS authoring tool that allows anybody to create themes for WordPress or Movable Type. There are also existing themes created by other user which are available for use.

Personally I haven’t found anything useful for my own taste, but you might be more lucky. It is easy to create by following the workflow and before you know it, you might have a new theme ready for download and installation.

350 pages is a web 2.0 style website creator with tons of customization options. The only draw back to this site is that one will have to sign up first to start customizing websites. With 100s of available designs and a drag and drop interface it will make designing a website a breeze.

There is also an advanced graphics technology at your disposal and you don’t have to download any software. Everything is online based and you are sure to find a suitable layout to get you started.

This also comes with its own hosting="http://gobala.linktrackr.com/hostgator-bs:keywords">hosting, which means that the username you choose on the sign up page will also be part of your URL as 350 will host the site for you.

If you happen to choose WordPress as a username, then your URL would look like

www.wordpress.350.com. Naturally this is only an example.

Using a free hosting server is only good for non money related blogs and websites anyway. But it might just give you a lovely site for your hobby blog or whatever.

Hopefully these sites will help to inspire you if you are looking to build your own theme. There are literally many more sites like these on the Internet but not all are good. You will just have to find one that is good enough for you and run with it.
